As part of our Second Hand September celebrations, we interviewed Vicky, the Sales Lead at our Retail Hub, to find out more about her role.
Hi, I’m Vicky Sanderson, the Sales Lead at the Barnsley Hospice Retail Hub.
What brought you to the Retail Hub?
I started working with the hospice in early 2020 to cover absences across our former retail outlets. I had previously worked for a national Retailer for 19 years, but I left as I wanted to give back to my local community.
My Nan accessed Barnsley Hospice’s Day Therapy services over 20 years ago, but my family have never forgotten to support the service offered to my Nan. I have always wanted to do something to give back, so I am delighted to be a part of the Retail Hub team.
What does your role involve?
As Sales Lead, I am responsible for running the shop floor. My day often starts by picking stock from the fantastic donations we’ve had that week, and then I set to work with visual merchandising the store to make sure the items shine.
Throughout the day, I can be found doing anything from answering phone calls to book collections and deliveries, supporting customers in finding a bargain and working with our volunteers on the till.
What is your favourite part of working at the Hub?
My favourite part of working at Hub is meeting the lovely customers who shop with us. I often have the privilege of hearing people’s connections with the hospice, which makes me even prouder to be a part of supporting the care the hospice provides.
I also love getting the chance to use my skills to showcase pre-loved items. I can always get creative, as you never know what you’ll find in the donations pile!
Why should people shop and donate at the Hub?
Whether you’re dropping off a donation or shopping for your newest outfit, you’ll be supporting the specialist support the hospice provides to the people of Barnsley. It’s also great for the environment!
We’re also a friendly bunch, with lots of expertise between us, so we’re more than happy to help if you are shopping pre-loved for the first time.
Finally, do you have a stand-out donation?
It’s SO hard to choose, as there have been so many fabulous donations! I would have to say anything from OSKA or a Radley bag.
