Wayne takes on sponsored cycle ride to the ‘bottom of the world’ in support of the hospice
In December, Wayne Exley will embark on a three-month sponsored cycle ride to the ‘bottom of the world’ to raise £1,000 for Barnsley Hospice.
Wayne will begin his ride in the capital of Chile, Santiago and plans to finish the challenge in the world’s southernmost city, Ushuaia in Argentina. He will ride over 3,000 miles through Chile and Argentina’s breathtaking landscapes. Along the way, Wayne will crisscross the Andes and journey southwards past the seven lakes of Argentina, before reaching the finish line in March 2024.
A challenge like this is not usually without inspiration and Wayne is undertaking this monumental fundraiser in memory of his sister-in-law, Patricia, and close friend, Howard, who he describes as “loving, caring, kind and generous people”.
After seeing the care both Patricia and Howard received at Barnsley Hospice at the end of their lives, Wayne wanted to find a way to give back to the charity.
Ahead of his challenge, he said: “We are very grateful for the care and support that was provided by Barnsley Hospice.
“Fundraising for them is only one way we can say thank you for caring.”
Vicky Stead, Community Relationships Manager at the Barnsley Hospice, said: “I can truly say that I have never seen anyone take on a fundraising challenge quite like this, and we will all be cheering Wayne on back in Barnsley.
“We can’t thank him enough for his support and wish him all the best for the next three months.”
Wayne will be keeping the hospice updated with his progress throughout his challenge, and you can find out how he is getting on across the hospice’s social media pages and their website.
