Barnsley Legends night kicks off with £10,400 for Barnsley Hospice
A ‘Legends Night’ of former Barnsley footballing stars has raised a staggering £10,411 for Barnsley Hospice.
Held at Barnsley Metrodome on August 29, around 250 Barnsley fans heard a host of stories from some of their favourite ex-players and managers, including Danny Wilson, Allan Clarke, Barry Murphy, Adam Hammill, Jon Parkin and Gerry Taggart, all of whom answered questions about their time with the club, treating the audience to many laughs and insights about goings on both on and off the pitch. Guests enjoyed an entertaining evening including magic from Mark Maycock, comedian Gary Marshall, songs by Shane Morrall and a pie and pea supper.
The money was raised through ticket sales, and a raffle and auction of an array of Barnsley footballing memorabilia, with the event organiser, Kev Johnson, hoping the evening was the first of many.
“I’m thrilled about the amount we’ve managed to raise and grateful for everybody’s support,” said Kev. “I have run a few events for Rotherham Hospice with ex-Rotherham players like this and was unsure how successful we’d be coming to Barnsley, but I’ve been blown away by everybody’s kind comments on how successful the night was and everybody’s generosity. To raise more than £10,000 is fantastic and I’m hoping this is the first of many and we can continue to raise funds for Barnsley Hospice.”
Simon Atkinson, Corporate Partnership Manager for Barnsley Hospice, added: “A truly wonderful night was had by all and everyone at Barnsley Hospice would like to thank Kev and all those involved who made the night the huge success it was. As we celebrate the hospice’s 30-year anniversary, it’s events like this that have helped us be there for the Barnsley public over the last three decades, and the £10,400 is an incredible amount that will go a long way in ensuring our vital services can continue for the people of Barnsley.”
Barnsley Hospice would like to thank everybody who attended the event and our wonderful volunteers who made the night possible.
