Barnsley Hospice Abseil

Proudly sponsored by Ardagh Glass, Rapid Response Telecoms and Barnsley Brickwork.

Prepare to descend from over 100 feet by taking part in our Abseil – brand new for 2025!

  • Date: Saturday 17 May 2025
  • Timings: 9:30 am to 4 pm (you will be assigned a time slot)
  • Meeting point: Barnsley College, Old Mill Lane Campus
  • Registration and sponsorship: Registration fee is ÂŁ50 and you must raise a minimum of ÂŁ200 sponsorship.

Descending from the roof of iconic Barnsley College’s Old Mill Lane site, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the borough on your adrenaline-filled journey down. Plus, there will be an opportunity to go down side by side with another brave supporter, so why not take on the challenge with a friend, colleague or family member to make it even more memorable?

You’ll be completing the challenge alongside other Barnsley Hospice supporters, coming together to help make a difference in the specialist care we provide to local families when they need it most. So, even though the building you’re abseiling down is red – expect to see a lot of hospice orange on the day!

Specialist instructors will be overseeing the challenge, providing a full safety briefing and abseil equipment on the day.

What’s included in the registration fee?

  • Your abseil place, safety briefing and equipment
  • Guidance from our fundraising team about the challenge and raising sponsorship
  • An orange hospice t-shirt to wear during the abseil
  • A Hospice Hero medal for completing the challenge and reaching your fundraising target!

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do I need to raise?

To secure your place you must pay a registration fee of ÂŁ50. Then, we ask all Abseilers to raise a minimum of ÂŁ200, which will cover the cost of the challenge and help the hospice to continue providing specialist care to the people of Barnsley and their loved ones.

Can I do it in a team?

Yes! The more the merrier and you can team up with friends and family for the challenge. If you are taking on the challenge with others, please sign up and pay your registration fees individually so we can confirm numbers and ensure you all have a place. You can let us know the name(s) of people you want to do the abseil with when you sign up, and we will do our best to coordinate your timeslots. Please note, only two people can abseil at the same time and we cannot guarantee who will go down on the other line when you complete your abseil.

If you’re not doing the abseil with others, you’ll still be joined by fellow Barnsley Hospice supporters all helping to make a difference like you!

What time is my abseil?

The abseil event will take place between 9:30 am and 4 pm. Your 30-minute time slot will be confirmed by email a few weeks before the event. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide you with a choice of timeslots. However, we will do our best to coordinate your timeslot with any friends or family members you want to complete the challenge with.

You will be required to arrive 30 minutes before your abseil time.

Can I bring people to watch?

Yes, of course! More information will be provided about spectator areas ahead of the event.

How do I raise the sponsorship?

Our team can help you set up a JustGiving page connected to the hospice which can be shared with friends via text and social media. Or if you prefer to collect donations in person, you can download and print off one of our sponsorship forms.

Don’t forget, our Challenge Events Manager, Hannah, is on hand to support you from the moment you sign up and can share advice on raising as much sponsorship as possible.

What do I need to take?

All safety equipment will be provided by our organisers on the day. We’d recommend wearing warm, comfortable clothes and suitable footwear like trainers or walking boots. Glasses and hard contact lenses cannot be worn during the abseil. If you have long hair, please be prepared to tie it up and out of the way.

Is parking available?

Parking will not be available on-site, however, there are a number of car parks nearby. You can find out more on the Barnsley Council website.

Our fundraising team will be on hand to help you in the lead-up to the abseil. If you have any questions or issues with your fundraising, don’t hesitate to get in touch with our Challenge Events Manager, Hannah at hannah.clarkson@barnsley-hospice.org.
