Light up a Life in memory of someone you love
Celebrating and remembering loved ones is at the heart of Light Up a Life. We are inviting you to make a donation and dedicate a light in memory of someone special this Christmas. Every donation makes a huge difference to the care we provide, helping us to support hundreds of local people every year.
Your lights will shine brightly on the beautiful Christmas trees on the hospice grounds and at St Mary’s Church, symbolising the light of loved ones that will forever remain. You are also welcome to join our Light Up a Life services, where you can enjoy songs and readings chosen with love by hospice staff and volunteers.
You will receive a handwritten card containing the names of those you are remembering and a wooden heart decoration on which you can write a message and then hang on your Christmas tree or display at home. For this first year, each dedication will be recorded in an online Book of Remembrance, which will be available to view at the services and on our website.
We will be holding two services this year:
Non-religious service at Barnsley Hospice
on Saturday 30 November at 4:30 pm.
Religious service at St Mary’s Church
on Sunday 1 December at 3:30 pm.

Dedicate a light
Your lights will shine on the Christmas trees at Barnsley Hospice and St Mary’s Church throughout the festive period – representing those you are remembering.
For the first year, each dedication will be recorded in an online Book of Remembrance, which will be available to view at our services and on our website. You will also recieve a handwritten card containing the name(s) of your dedication, along with a beautiful heart decoration to display at home.
Attend a service
For those who would like to join together with others, we have two Light up a Life services where you can celebrate the lives of those important to you. The services will be filled with uplifting songs and readings, held at Barnsley Hospice and St Mary’s Church.
Make a difference
Last year, our Light up a Life campaign raised over £30,000 for the hospice and we simply could not continue our work without fundraisers such as this one.
Each light dedicated helps us to provide an aspect of our care, and we want to say thank you to everyone involved.
Taking part in Light up a Life helps us to help others
Each donation made throughout the Light up a Life appeal goes toward helping us to continue providing specialist palliative and end of life care to the people of Barnsley.
Hannah, Lauren and Becky are dedicating a light in celebration of their Mum, Helen, who was cared for by the hospice.
“We have many things to be grateful to Barnsley Hospice for, but the main one was for giving Mum hope. Mum knew she wasn’t going to survive but all she wanted was for people around her to give her hope and that’s exactly what everyone at Barnsley Hospice did.
“It’s the little things that people usually take for granted that really helped Mum. Staff gave her the equipment she needed to get to the beautiful outside areas by herself and gave her a notebook to write down her successes. Mum was always an independent, determined woman, raising three girls on her own and didn’t let a terminal illness stop her from doing the things she wanted.
“Thanks to the hospice, we could step back and become daughters again rather than the combined role of carers and daughters we had become before the hospice. We were all then able to use the last bit of time together making lasting memories for her and us.”

You can dedicate a light and make your donation by using our quick and secure online form below. If you’d prefer to make a donation offline, please give our fundraising team a call on 01226 244 244 during office hours.
Once you have made your donation, we will send you a beautiful Light up a Life card, handwritten with the name(s) of the loved ones you are remembering this Christmas. Your dedicated names will also be added to the online Book of Remembrance which will be available to view at our services and on our website.
Please note, dedications received after 24 November will be added to the online Book of
Remembrance after the date of the services.
